It is not that the acting of Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson was bad (in fact their acting was the only good part of it), it was that the script was just so bad! Yes a lot of the dialect was taken from the book but when I was reading the book it did not sound as cheesy as it did on the screen, for example, "I want to show you my play room" "like where you keep your xbox and stuff?, #CringeCentral. I have to say I have never cringed as much in my life as I did during the 125mins that this film lasted. I never thought that watching a film about sex with my boyfriend would be as awkward as it was. My boyfriend and I have been to the cinema to watch "Shame" and that is about a sex addict (while we were surrounded by old men!!!) and it still was not as awkward as watching this!
I had many preconceptions about this movie as I went to see it, just as I would imagine many others did, but it just did not live up tot he hype for me. Like yes he is a millionaire with a fetish and she is the innocent virgin and they do some 'kinky' stuff but unlike the book it is actually really soft on the screen. I understand that they could not make it as graphic as the book because then it would be classed as porn but the movie is just not as effective. I kinda gathered that fact that it was pretty bad when I discovered my boyfriend laughed for probably 115 mins out of the movie.
I know I say it to a lot of people about books that are made into movies, that the movie is nowhere near as good as the book, but this is a case that is 100% true. However, with that said I still know I am going to go see the next 2 movies when they are released because now I have seen one I need to see if the next two are as cringe worthy. I would give this movie another go in my own house as maybe it would be less awkward and cringe if you are not watching it while surrounded by 50 strangers.
Over all I would give this movie a 5/10 I could take it or leave it. (This mark could change it when I watch it at home so it is provisional, I will update and let you know when I know!)
Have you seen 50 Shades of Grey? What did you think?
Did you like it or prefer the book?
xoxo
